In order to show what skills and techniques we have learned from the Old Master's project, the self-portrait project is a way to further exhibit those techniques and skills. We are going to take a picture of ourselves and then transform it into a large-scale drawing using the medium and style of our previous Old Master. For my self-portrait, I am going to use the same (red chalk) conte crayon for my medium. The lines and values are supposed to mimic that of the Old Master, and so I will be basing my mark making off of Andrea del Sarto.
Madonna of the Harpies 1517 tempera on panel 207 x 178 cm Pitti Palace Andrea Del Sarto was a High Renaissance Italian painter. Sarto had been influenced by Fra Bartolomeo, Michelangelo, and Leonardo Da Vinci. Sarto had such a great reputation when he was young that the King of France invited him to court. Andrea Del Sarto had lived through very difficult times. The Siege of Florence had been occurring at the time. Home invasions were common for people during that time, and Sarto had also been asked to paint some works of "unpleasant nature." Alongside the Siege of Florence, Andrea Del Sarto had experienced the plague, which was eventually his cause of death. See link for more information! Credits:

At first it was just a light contour sketch. This sketch had developed with a light pain wash background (that had actually not turned out as expected, since it had been covered in dirt and dust from falling off of the drying rack when somebody had accidentally made it fall off). From the paint wash I had started using the conte crayon to start to imitate the Andrea Del Sarto's study.
This is my first entry in many yet to come! I would like to post periodically about my progress throughout the school year and express my progress and results from trying new things and experiencing different things as well!
